Capt. Cruger memorial services set

The Spokane Valley Fire Department would like to extend an invitation to other fire/police/EMS agencies to attend the memorial services for Capt. Tim Cruger on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Cruger's ceremony will be performed with full Line of Duty Death honors by the Spokane Valley Fire Department and IAFF Local 876. Uniformed personnel from other agencies are welcome to attend, and Class A or Class B uniforms would be appropriate.

Cruger was hired by the Spokane Valley Fire Department on June 16, 1986, and served as a firefighter, engineer, lieutenant and captain for over 29 years. He was a second generation firefighter who spent the majority of his career proudly serving the citizens of the Spokane Valley area from Station 7 on Evergreen Road.

Cruger retired April 22, 2015, and soon after developed kidney cancer which metastasized to his colon, lungs and brain.
Due to the high incidence of specific cancers in firefighters from exposure to toxic smoke, along with his diagnosis just after retirement, Cruger has been deemed a Line of Duty Death in accordance with Washington state occupational disease laws.

Services will be 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at Valley Assembly Church, 15618 E. Broadway Ave., in Spokane Valley.

Uniformed personnel who would like to assist in the honor corridor for Cruger should arrive no later than 11:30 a.m..
Uniformed first responders who would like to attend memorial services should arrive to be seated prior to the start of 1 p.m. services.

Questions on attending the services or participating in the apparatus procession can be directed to 928-1700. Ask for your message to be forwarded to Captain Josh Loftin.
