Guarisco fills open spot on SVFD board

Managing Editor

The Spokane Valley Fire Department Board of Fire Commissioners has appointed John Guarisco to fill a vacancy among its members.

Guarisco was selected following interviews with five residents interested in filling the position. He will serve the community by overseeing the affairs of the department as one of five members, said Melanie Rose, department spokeswoman.

The vacancy was created in May when Commissioner Joe Dawson resigned due to health concerns. Dawson had served on the board for more than 20 years.

Guarisco is a fourth-generation area resident and lives in the Spokane Valley with his family. He founded Marjoni Marketing in 2004 and in 2010 merged with MDI Marketing where he continues to serve his clients.

Guarisco has long been active in the community, currently serving as the Assistant Governor for Rotary International District 5080. He has won numerous awards during his career including the Volunteer of the Year Award (2014) and the Community Caring Award (2010) from the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Restauranteur of the Year (1993) from the Restaurant and Hospitality Association when he owned Luigi’s in the Spokane Valley.

“I am passionate about this community,” said Guarisco. “That’s why I am excited to serve as the newest member of the Spokane Valley Fire Department Board of Fire Commissioners.”

Guarisco holds an associate’s degree in telecommunications and broadcasting from Spokane Falls Community College. He is also a graduate of Central Valley High School.

As the individual appointed to this nonpartisan position, Guarisco must run for elected office in November 2019 to fill the unexpired term. The term expires on Dec. 31, 2021. A fire commission term is six years.
