Eighth Avenue closed for safety project

Managing Editor

A project to improve safety for schoolchildren and other pedestrians along East Eighth Avenue between Thierman Road and Dickey Road got underway on Monday.

During the month-long construction project, 8th Avenue will be closed for all but local access for residents and emergency vehicles.

Signs will be posted redirecting through-traffic, say city officials.
Spokane Transit Authority Route 94 bus stops in the project area will be temporarily relocated.

For details, contact STA at 328-RIDE (7433).
Drivers are reminded to observe the speed limit and use particular caution when traveling through the residential areas of the project, being alert for children and other pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles backing out of driveways.

The project includes adding a sidewalk along the north side of Eighth Avenue, including ramps to ensure accessibility for those with mobility concerns. A 15-foot shared-use lane will be added for westbound traffic, and stormwater drainage improvements will also be made.
