U-Haul buys U-City building site

If there’s not quite enough storage space at the new Spokane Valley City Hall, there will be at least one neighbor more than willing to help out.

U-Haul International Inc. announced last week that it purchased the former JC Penney building at University City – a stone’s throw from the new City Hall – on June 30.

The 108,766-square-foot building is located at 10412 E. Sprague Ave. Plans call for 835 indoor climate-controlled self-storage units with state-of-the-art security features. The first phase of the units will be available in early 2018.

Professional hitch installation and propane will also be available soon.

“This acquisition is all about customer convenience,” said Manny Mendez, U-Haul Co. of Inland Northwest president. “Spokane Valley is a growing community…other facilities in the area are near self-storage capacity, so we are happy to serve more customers.”
The JC Penney building opened in 1965.

“We look forward to beautifying this property while reducing our carbon footprint and saving building materials through adaptive reuse,” Mendez said.
