New regional bicycling maps available online

Managing Editor

After a long winter and a lot of snow and rain, many people are getting their bikes out and hitting the roads and trails. If you are one of them, there are some online interactive maps you should know about; the Spokane Regional Bike Map and a series of recreational bike rides around the region.

SRTC recently created an app of Recreational Bike Ride Maps for those riding for fun or exercise. You can see them at maps.arcgis.com/home.

The app has 16 “rec ride” maps all in one place that can easily be viewed on a phone or other electronic device. There are rides from downtown Spokane to Cheney, to Elk and around Reflection Lake, from north Spokane around Greenbluff, Liberty Lake’s Saltese Loop and many more. Each map includes the distance of the ride, a description of the terrain including slope, and a printable map and written directions for the ride.

If you ride more for transportation or prefer shorter rides, the Spokane Regional Bike Map has been updated for 2017 with new bicycle lanes, extensions to existing trails and other bike infrastructure added during the 2016 construction season.

To see what bicycling options are available in your area, pan and zoom to your neighborhood or the route you take to work or school. The map shows shared use paths, bike lanes, shared roadways, and facilities where bikes are prohibited.

Points on the map -- such as trailheads, park and ride lots, and bike shops -- can be clicked to view what amenities they offer, such as restrooms, parking and bike lockers.

Both the Bike Map and the Recreation Ride maps can be viewed on all devices- smartphones, tablets or computers. You can find links to both on the home page of SRTC’s website, srtc.org.
