Downing reaches finals at state 2A swimming

Staff Reporter

East Valley freshman Ethan Downing advanced to Saturday's B finals in both of events at the 2A/3A/4A state swimming championships last Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Swimming through a co-op agreement with Cheney High School, Downing qualified for the 100-yard butterfly, turning in a preliminary time on Friday of 55.74 seconds to make it into the final field of 16. On Saturday, he posted a time of 57.25 to finish 16th overall.
In the 500 freestyle, Downing turned in a finals-qualifying time of 5:02.82, finishing 12th overall on Saturday in 5:04.04. Cheney head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said the Knights freshman dropped six seconds off his previous best time in the 500, and 1.5 seconds off his best mark in the butterfly.
"Those were good swims," she added.
Downing's finishes earned him six team points, good enough for 34th out of 39 teams competing.
