Firefighters Extinguish Fire Inside Manufacturing Plant

Managing Editor

Spokane Valley Fire Department units responded to a commercial structure fire at Thermoguard, 125 N. Dyer Road at10:20 a.m. on Feb. 26.

The sprinkler system inside Thermoguard’s manufacturing plant was triggered by fire inside the machinery used to shred, grind and fiberize recycled newspaper into cellulose, said Melanie Rose, department spokeswoman. Eight employees inside the facility safely evacuated and were outside when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters attacked the fire, located inside ductwork inside the hopper, from multiple angles due to the difficult location and density of the burning and smoldering material.

In addition to the aggressive firefighting efforts, crews secured power and gas to the building and completed a search of the large, multi-story structure. The fire was under control shortly after 11 a.m.
A total of 15 apparatus and support vehicles responded to the scene, including several crews from the Spokane Fire Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
