The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has received full accreditation from the National Association of Medical Examiners.
According to the accreditation letter sent by NAME, the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office attained high marks in several critical areas.
“The accreditation process consists of a rigorous inspection of the physical facility and review of the office practices, including the implementation of policies and procedures. The overall objective of the accreditation is to ensure that the application of the standards set forth by NAME will aid in developing and maintaining a high caliber medicolegal death investigation system for the communities in the jurisdiction in which they operate,” wrote David Fowler, NAME chairman.
Dr. John Howard is the acting chief medical examiner for Spokane County this year, a position that alternates each year between Howard and Dr. Sally Aiken. According to Aiken, the NAME accreditation expires every five years. The accreditation process deals with every aspect of the medical examiner’s office, from paperwork archiving, to investigations and autopsies.
“The federal government and local jurisdictions have recognized accreditation by the National Association of Medical Examiners as being the ‘gold standard’ in any death investigation system. We are proud that our office can attain that distinction to better serve Spokane County,” Aiken said.
