Nielsen named District 8 chief

Tony Nielsen was recently named the new fire chief for Spokane County Fire District 8 by the board of commissioners.
Nielsen started his career with District 8, which serves the southern portion of the Ponderosa neighborhood and the area south of Spokane Valley, in 1984 as an explorer volunteer cadet. In 1989, he became a resident firefighter before taking a job as a full-time firefighter/paramedic with the Port Angeles Fire Department.
Nielsen returned to Fire District 8 in 2003 as the division chief in charge of training and then promoted to deputy chief of operations.
Nielsen has a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University and is also a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program, where he received his Chief Officer Certification and the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
Nielsen is currently serving as the executive chairman of the Spokane County EMS Council, serves on the Spokane Community College Fire Science Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the Spokane County Fire Radio Interoperability Committee.
He is married and has two sons.
An official badge-pinning ceremony was held Monday.

The designation means the Spokane Valley News Herald will publish the city's legal notices on a contract basis for one year.
