Bid opening for fire administration building Dec. 16

It might be cold outside, but anticipation for a new headquarters for the Spokane Valley Fire Department away from Sprague Avenue is heating up.

Plans continue on schedule to construct a new administration building, adjacent to Fire Station 8 at Wilbur and Montgomery, in 2011. The board of commissioners for the fire district plan to hold a special meeting on Dec. 16 to open bids for the project, which Valley fire officials are thinking will be close to $4.8 million.
The department is outgrowing the current aging administration building, located on Sprague across from University City at 10319 E. Sprague.

While there was some consideration on making a decision on a builder before Christmas, fire officials opted to take some time over the holiday season to consider the bids before making their selection early next year.

“Technically, we need to wait for January when the new budget is in effect,” said Fire Chief Mike Thompson.

Work on the structure could begin by early spring if weather permits.

The fire commissioners next meet on Monday, Dec. 13, at 4 p.m. at Station 8.

In other news, the commissioners unanimously approved a $33.3 million budget for 2011, up from 29.5 million in 2010.
